  2. Power focus areas

Some of the kids taking power focus areas don’t take any notes and they just testing their luck by guessing rather than showing their knowledge. A power focus area is a ten question quiz that covers a specific topic. To pass a power focus assessment a student must score an 8/10 on the test. One thing our teachers are encouraging us to do is to take notes and be ready to take the assessment. Mr. Joachim has challenged us to only take it once to try to get a 10/10. Why do the kids try to do nothing but just pass the focus areas? Here is the answer the kids just try to get done with the year and try to get some free time.

Some kids have taken tests 3, 5, or 14...all the way up to 63 times on one test before they pass it. A student should just need to take it once, 3 at the most. Some kids still take it more so we should establish a rule that makes it so that you have to look through most of the resources. There is some sort of punishment if you do not read most of the resources. Yes you can just click it and open it and close it and not take it any notes. The kids that are ahead of the line are probably the ones that look and read through the resources.

Kids should help other kids to take notes read the resources and ask teachers if they need help. The kids that are ahead and got high scores on their tests should be Power Focus Peer Mentors for the kids that need help. Kids that need help should not be afraid of asking other students or teachers for help. The school should have a safe environment for kids. What do you think?

I encourage you to earn a flash reward by passing your next power focus area on the first attempt.

    NO BULLYING
Mary walker school district does not tolerate bullying if you’re a guardian of a student that attends Mary-walker and you’re wondering if your kid is being bullied or is the bully then talk with you child. We are trying to prevent bullying of any kind. For example, no name calling, cyber bullying or if it goes as far as hitting. We do not want these kind of act of behavior at this school. Please talk to your kids and give them more information on how to be a good person because we never know what other students are going through at home.

As you know we kids writing this article, we understand how it is and we’ve experienced and seen acts of bullying, other kids will bully poor kids that don't have as nice shoes, bags and clothes as them, or if they do not have a phone because they cannot afford it, some kids even get made fun of because they hardly get food at home, some get bullied for being too skinny or too big, others get made fun of because they don't have as large as a friend group, or get bullied from the past, or based on the families and where or how they grew up . Not everyone has the same amount of wealth. Rather than having your kid being bullied or being the bully have them understand and try to tell them what other kids might be going through because it's not easy for them.

Here at Mary-walker teachers have already talked about bullying and showing empathy for others and has improved in the past year a couple of students have been sticking up for each other instead of standing on the sidelines watching these acts happen. Some students will stop themselves and realize what they are doing. Some of them wait till after the act and say sorry,

Have you ever had your kid do counseling? Maybe suggest it for both the bully and the one being bullied, bullies need this because some kids take their anger from home and bring it out on other kids which causes bullying and sometimes even fights therefore counseling would help them out. Counseling helps with a lot of things. If your kid isn’t too comfortable with you or if you think it’s the best decision for them and the community around them then i suggest you to put them in their, our counselors, Mrs. J and ms. Fincher, are great counselors they will make everyone feel welcome and will make you child feel free to talk about anything .

    We hope this helps:)

  9. ❤Kindness:❤

What is kindness? How do you show kindness? What is the purpose of kindness?

There are some days that people have that they just don’t enjoy, that’s why we people show their kindness and treat them nicely. Just because you may not like a certain person doesn’t mean you get to treat them rudely, remember the golden rule “Treat others the way you want to be treated.”Kindness; meaning that you shouldn’t treat others badly be kind if someone needs something off a shelf or something similar, be kind and help them.

Helping others or just being respectful can change others' attitudes towards others when people start being kind that attitude spreads when helping others. Even the little things count, hold a door, help get something for them for example, grab a book. Sometimes someone just needs a little motivation of kindness it could help others get in a better mood than what they were in before. No one wants to be treated unfairly than the way you help others out.

When someone needs help, help them and be kind. If your teacher is having a bad day, be nice and tell others to treat them the way you want to be treated. Leaving a note to give other people confidence is another act of kindness. Even just being their friend is another act of kindness, there is always that person who makes a difference.

Be that one person, be kind.

  11. Going Hog Wild For 4-H

    By: Kaylynn Lyons

Most teens our age spend their Summers on their phones, binge-watching Netflix or lost in video games. There is a group of fun, energetic kids who enjoy the farm life. Spending your summer feeding, training, and raising your show animal is a lot of work. But it can pay off as well.

The best thing about 4-H to me is being with friends as we accomplish as individuals and as a group. Whether you show an animal to sell at the fat stock sale or even show your favorite pet, 4-H will always be more than ribbons and money. The memories you gain are worth far more.

Have you ever swung danced late at night to a Dj playing loud music? Ate a pound of curly fries with your friends, or laughed so hard over the stupidest things?

In 4-H you are more than just kids showing livestock. You are a family. A family that gets up at 5 am to feed hogs, a family that spends their summer decorating and building their farm decorations. A family that plans camps and spends every evening talking about life.

4-H has a famous saying “make the best better.” everyone has the best in them, they just need to find something that will make them better. Better in life, better as a person and better to themselves.

  12. Recently I’ve been feeling as though everyone and their mother who’s interested in improving their nutrition takes some sort of collagen or protein powder in their morning smoothie or hot drink. Marco Canora, James Beard Award-winning chef and owner of NYC bone broth shop Brodo, knows the power of protein and fat, but he’s not interested in powders. Canora recently launched Brothie at Brodo, which are fruit smoothies that incorporate 8 ounces of chicken broth. That’s right—savory chicken bone broth in a fruit smoothie. Canora knows it may take a bit of convincing to get someone to try a Brothie, but he’s also sure that once they do, the smoothie’s killer flavor profile speaks for itself.
“People tend to go right to saying things like ‘that’s so gross, so weird’, and I was conscious of that,” Canora told me on the phone. “Chicken broth was a little lighter and more neutral in flavor, and more conducive for the fruit pairing… [it was] going to have the least impact in terms of competing with the other ingredients.” The chef also explained that along with the fruit, the Brothies also contain plenty of other ingredients, so the cold broth isn’t the main flavor at play. Once a consumer gets past their original hesitation, they can focus on the tangible nutritional benefits of bone broth in a smoothie: “instead of protein powder, you get eight ounces of the collagen-rich real product,” said Canora. Of course, if you don’t want chicken broth in your drink, the Brodo team can make the Brothie with any of their broths, including their seaweed-mushroom broth, beef broth, and chicken-turkey-beef broth.
Each of the three Brothies is a unique stunning color, and there was a reason for that too. Canora told me that he wanted to create something around phytonutrients, the chemical compound in the colors of fruits and vegetables. “The richer the color, the higher the chemical compounds, which equates to nutrient value in terms of anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antioxidant properties,” said Canora. “I thought ‘what are the deepest darkest purple things I can get,’ and then I asked the same thing about green and orange, and that drove the formulation of these things.”
These questions led to the creation of the Deep Purple (beets, cherries, blackberries, blueberries), Garden Green (spinach, kale, parsley, green apple, mango), and Everything Orange (carrot, mango, orange, turmeric, ginger juice) Brothies. In addition to those core ingredients, each smoothie contains banana, extra virgin coconut oil, and chia seeds. The green smoothie also has pumpkin seeds, and the orange one incorporates flaxseed.

  14. The effects of gaming

Video games can negatively affect the brain, memory, and vision. They can cause stress, anxiety, and even isolation if the addiction gets severe enough. Videogames can even kill brain cells and interrupt a person's sleep. Studies show that people playing "shooter games" damage the hippocampus area of their brain. Studies show that people playing "shooter games" damage the hippocampus area of their brain. This is the area used for spatial and long-term memories. Research states that this is because shooter games require excessive use of the caudate nucleus rather than the hippocampus. The caudate nucleus takes grey matter from the hippocampus, which can lead to illnesses like depression and Alzheimer's.

Does playing video games hurt your vision?
Just like 3 or more hours of video gameplay can cause health issues, it can also cause vision issues. While playing video games for short times (1 hour or so) does have its benefits, playing for more than 3 hours can cause computer eye syndrome, eye pain, issues with focusing, and even headaches. Can video games kill brain cells?
Whether video games kill brain cells is still out for debate, but a study conducted by scientists at Tohoku University did find that children who play video games for hours a day might have underdeveloped frontal lobes. This can inhibit proper emotions, the ability to learn, and the ability to remember things.

Do video games cause violent behavior?
Violent video games have been tied to violent behavior, but to varying degrees. While it often shows decreased empathy in video game players, as well as a tendency to be more aggressive, there are no conclusive studies that show a direct correlation between video games and crimes committed. The feeling is that the longer a person (child or adult) is exposed to violent video games, the more aggressive they may become.
What are the types of video game addiction?
There are two types of video game addiction. First is the addiction to single-player video games. Gamers get addicted to beating a certain score or completing a specific mission. If they are unable to do so, they become obsessed.
The other type of video game addiction has to do with multi-player games. Gamers addicted to these types of games get lost in their "virtual world." They find a way to escape their own reality and become one with their online character and the people in it. When forced to leave this fantasy world, the addict can become irritable and/or aggressive.

So parents don't let your kids play too many games because it can ruin their eyesight, some games will make them violent, and cause stress.

  15. Charger Cross Country: The twenty-eighth of September will be my second XC league meet but my fourth overall. My name is Tomeko and my favorite sport is Cross Country because when I run I feel free. The reason I feel free is when I run through the woods and up and down hills it soothes my energy. I was first introduced to Cross Country in the 6th grade when middle school sports were new to me. I always liked running but I never knew it was a sport in elementary, but now I do and I like it.

Cross country is a sport where middle school run 1.5 miles and high school runs 3 miles. We normally run on trails but sometimes we run on roads that are used quite often. Last year for cross country the closest I got to first was fourth, but I got an amazing time. There were about 45 kids in that race including three of my teammates, my time for that race was 11:06. This year the closest I got to first was first. I did this at NWC in their mud run. My time for that course was 7:11 and my number was 176 and backward is 671 and in time it is 7:11.

To achieve my time for the mud run, my mom told me if I run fast I will get a treat so I pushed my self and ended up in first, but I didn’t know what the treat was. I ended up eating 5 cheeseburgers and 10 chicken nuggets with a large drink. All of my teammates didn’t believe I could eat all of it, but I proved them wrong. That is why Cross Country is my favorite sport.

  17. πŸ’–πŸ’€Vaping:πŸ’€πŸ’–
Have you ever seen kids like my age or younger vaping? Recently, two teens have died from lung disease because of vaping. There are so many kids that vape. When you are my age 11 or 12 you might see older kids vaping and it makes you want to vape. But if you start vaping when you are my age your chance of smoking cigarettes when you are older quadruplets then you would if you started smoking right now. Vape shops are telling people it is good for you but they had the chance to tell us how it is good for you but they couldn’t but they also couldn’t tell us how bad it is for you.

So you decide do you want your kids to start doing this? Do you know how many kids or teens are getting lung disease from vaping? Tell me what would you do if you saw a 10, 11, or 12 year old vaping? What if you saw your own child vaping and imagine them getting luge cancer and not being able to breath? Especially the kids with asthma and lung problems and children that it is hard to breath for them.

Now i have said my part you tell me do you want children really young vaping and getting luge cancer at my age? It's your choice I said my point of view but now you have to decide if you want this to change or not and let millions of children die from this. Now think we can stop this as a group and shut all vape shops out or we can stand here and watch them do this to our human culture.MAKE YOUR CHOICE NOW!

STOP VAPING WE COULD SAVE SO
    MANY LIVES!!!

  18. Bullying needs to stop.
    By Seraphine Wallette.

What is bullying? What is the cause of bullying? There are many causes of bullying, But what are people doing about it?
Children are commenting suicide almost every day because they are bullied for how they look or how they act. Don’t believe me? Ask a friend or if your a Parent ask your child. They may have been bullied or they may have bullied another person.
Somewhere in this world right now there is a child being bullied. Not too long ago there was a high schooler that was bullied because of his weight. He is a sophomore and almost committed suicide before his mom stopped him.
His mother shared a Facebook post about how upset he was and how mad she was. Those kids that were bullying him called him “fat” or “enormous” And in the post, it said that it was only the second day of a new school for this Sophomore. When he got off the bus and opened the door to his house he started crying. His mother tried to calm him but it didn't work. He was upset for almost a week she said.
Parents need to teach their children what bullying is and that it should not be accepted in our world. Parents, please teach your kids to be kind to everyone every day.
    Thank you.

  21. By: Ashton M. Sinclair The effects of energy drinks

Consuming 32 ounces of energy drinks (two cans of Monster Energy Drink, made by Monster Beverage Corporation MNST, +0.67%, or just under three cans of Red Bull) in under an hour spiked the risk of electrical disturbances in the heart for as long as four hours after the drinks were consumed, according to a small study published in Journal of the American Heart Association. Thirty-four healthy volunteers between the ages of 18 and 40 were randomly assigned to drink 32 ounces of one of two commercially-available (but unidentified) caffeinated energy drinks, or a placebo drink, on three separate days. Both energy beverages had 304 to 320 milligrams of caffeine per 32 fluid ounces; in comparison, a Starbucks Pike Place roast packs about 330 milligrams for 16 ounces. The placebo contained carbonated water, lime juice, and cherry flavoring. The beverages were swallowed within a 60-minute period, but no faster than one 16-ounce serving per 30 minutes, so the participants weren’t chugging two drinks back-to-back.

The researchers took electrocardiograms to measure electrical activity in the subjects’ hearts, for instance, the QT interval, or the length of time it takes the ventricles in the heart to prepare to beat again. They also recorded the subjects’ blood pressure. Both measurements were taken at the beginning of the experiment, and then every 30 minutes for four hours after the beverage was drunk. The participants who gulped the energy drinks had a higher QT interval at four hours compared to the placebo drinkers, and their blood pressure increased, as well. QT intervals that are too short or too long can cause life-threatening heart arrhythmias, and increased blood pressure can lead to heart failure, stroke and aneurysms by damaging the arteries and the heart.
“The public should be aware of the impact of energy drinks on their body, especially if they have other underlying health conditions,” Shah said in a statement. Healthcare professionals should advise certain patient populations, for example, people with underlying congenital or acquired long QT syndrome or high blood pressure, to limit or monitor their consumption.”
Neither Monster Energy nor Red Bull have responded to MarketWatch requests for comment. But the American Beverage Association defended the safety of energy drinks like PepsiCo PEP, +0.16% Rockstar brand or Coca-Cola’s KO, -0.29% upcoming Coke Energy in a statement to MarketWatch, saying: “Energy drinks have been enjoyed by millions of people around the world for more than 30 years and are recognized by government food safety agencies worldwide... as safe for consumption... America’s leading energy drink manufacturers voluntarily go beyond all federal requirements when it comes to responsible labeling and marketing practices, including displaying total caffeine content from all sources and advisory statements that the drinks are not recommended for children, pregnant or nursing women, or those sensitive to caffeine.”

    Some facts about her:
She went to school at WEU
She decided to become a teacher because she likes kids
Mrs.Smith was born in Chewelah, WA
She has been teaching up to 17 years
Lets take a minute and inspire her for staying a teacher to teach us kids a little about life.
Her birthday is December, 30, 1972
We had her tell us a little about how it was growing up for her and her response was “Was a lot of fun had a lot of friends and liked going to school.
We asked her does she have any kids other than the ones at school and she said only her dogs
She told us her inspiration is trying to make a difference
Some of her hobbies are being outdoors, walking her dogs, coaching and spending time with family
Her favorite holiday is the fourth of july and like this holiday because: The weather is awesome and fireworks
The sports she did as a kid: basketball and softball
We asked her who her favorite principal throughout teaching was and she said i haven't had one yet.

Here is a little bit about her from my perspective:
She is an inspiring teacher to me but, she has her good days and her bad days. She is also an amazing teacher. She does everything she can for you. If you have her as a teacher you are lucky so cherish the moments you have with her.

  25. Our English teacher

Hiedi Smith (Ms. Smith) is our beloved teacher, mentor, and coach in the Mary Walker middle school. She has sat down with us to answer a few of the questions that we thought wouldn’t be so personal rather than them being harder to answer.

    Some facts about her:
She went to school at E.W.U.
The reason she became a teacher was because she liked kids and summers off.
She was born December, 30th, 1972 in Chewelah, WA.
She has been teaching for about 17 years.
Ms.Smith thought it was fun going to school because she had a lot of friends.
Other than the kids she has at school he has her fur babies.
Her inspiration is trying to make a difference.
Some of Ms.Smith’s hobbies are walking her dogs, coaching, and likes to be outdoors in general.
Her favorite holiday is on the fourth of July because the weather is awesome.
Ms.Smith’s favorite sports growing up were softball and baseball.
She currently does not have a favorite principle in her 17 years of teaching.

In my opinion, Ms.Smith is an amazing English teacher and just an amazing teacher in general. Considering she has been teaching for around 17 years she has been an inspiration to us all in some way.
Ms.Smith has taught six subjects in her career and has been thoughtful enough for her to even let us watch movies based on books we’ve read in the past.
